Ju-jitsu (gentle art) was first developed in Japan by samurai as a means of self-defence in the event of finding oneself without a sword in battle. Today it has evolved into a system of movements and techniques that are relevant to modern self defence. The fundamental principle taught to all participants is the concept of giving way to your opponents force and redirecting it to your advantage. This means practitioners of Ju-jitsu need not be physically strong to overcome their opponent.
